Celebrating 100 Years of Helping Women in our Community
YWCA Fernhurst first opened its original location at the corner of Alapai and King Streets in 1921. Over the past century, Fernhurst has served as a welcoming place, providing transitional housing and support for women from all walks of life.
Now located in Makiki, our Fernhurst facility welcomes and houses women who are coming out of challenging circumstances such as incarceration, domestic violence, and substance abuse. Unfortunately, many of the women have experienced violence and deep traumas in their lives. Surrounded by the experienced Fernhurst staff, the women work to regain their confidence and get the tools they need to rebuild their lives so they can rejoin our community and their families.
This August and September 2021, we are celebrating this milestone with the Fernhurst 100th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign.
YWCA O'ahu is excited to announce our Fernhurst 100th $25,000 Donor Challenge Match. Through the generosity of our former YWCA O'ahu Board Member, Jodi Lam and her husband Tim Takaezu, and long-time YWCA supporters Alexander & Baldwin, Grace Pacific, and the Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000.
This is a great time to make your tax-deductible gift count and double the power of your giving. All funds will benefit Fernhurst and the women we serve.

A Moment in Our History:
Fernhurst's Continuing Evolution
Although Julia Morgan’s name is often associated with our historic headquarters Laniākea – it was her second architectural design work for YWCA O'ahu. Prior to Laniākea she designed Fernhurst, which opened at the corner of Alapai and King Streets in 1921. Fernhurst has been through different locations and renovations over the years, but it has continually been a place serving the needs of women in our community. Fernhurst Testimonials
“There’s a lot more people that come out of Fernhurst successful and move forward and have great lives, productive lives and are very active in the community. Fernhurst definitely changed me from the inside out. I believe anybody that gives Fernhurst a chance is going to find that it’s going to change your life forever.”
